The Blue Door Theatre is excited to bring Blue Doors and Dragons to the NWIF stage! One is never fully in control of improv and we’ve upped that “seat-of-the-pants” notion with allowing small math-rocks to be rolled and make choices for us! If you are a fan of fantasy, this is your show. If you are a fan of story telling, this is your show. If you are a fan of improv, this is your show. If you were dragged along because someone invited you, this is your show.
The Blue Door Theatre is dedicated to the advancement of improvisation, the performing arts, and community building through innovative entertainment and education. Proudly founded in 1996 by Mark Robbins, Unexpected Productions: Spokane was the first incarnation of The Blue Door Theatre, with shows every Friday night.
After four years of performing in a variety of spaces, the company moved to their own location in downtown Spokane. Here, with the help of Jason and Harmony Frederick, the troupe officially became The Blue Door Theatre, a 501c(3) certified non-profit arts organization. It was so named because the front door was blue.
In 2002 the BDT moved to Spokane’s eclectic Garland district for a magnificent run, until ultimately outgrowing that space (massive improv cannot be contained), and finding our new home back to downtown Spokane at the Benewah Milk Bottle. Since its creation, the BDT has been an all-volunteer organization. Our performers, box office staff and board of directors volunteer their time and talent.
In January 2023, the BDT opened the Spokane School of Improv to expand our class offerings. Staying true to our mission, the Spokane School of Improv not only offers classes for performance improv, but also a series of classes for how to use improv tools for the everyday and professional development. In its short time of being open, the school has greatly increased the reach of the improv community in Spokane, WA.
